A delegation of Uzbek engineers arrived in Afghanistan to work on the development of the Trans-Afghan railway project. The delegation, led by Uzbekistan's Transport Minister Ilkhom Mahkamov, includes specialists tasked with conducting a feasibility study and making preparations for the construction of the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railroad.
During their visit, Minister Mahkamov and his delegation met with Afghanistan's Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, to discuss the project's progress and plans. Minister Mahkamov also announced that another delegation would arrive in Afghanistan in the coming weeks, bringing equipment essential for the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway.
It is worth noting that the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan has seen growth, reaching almost $225 mn in 1Q24. This figure marks a 24.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023, which recorded a turnover of $180.2 mn. Afghanistan currently ranks ninth among Uzbekistan's trading partners in terms of foreign trade turnover.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Kazakhstan expressed its willingness to support Afghanistan in developing two railway transport corridors. Kazakhstan intends to participate in the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway, which will stretch from Termez to Peshawar, as well as the Herat-Kandahar-Spin-Buldak railway corridor. This commitment includes providing the necessary materials for building these railway lines, aimed at enhancing logistical connectivity in the region.
