Uzbek filmmaker Irina Savon has clinched recognition at the esteemed Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, the world's oldest and largest celebration of short filmmaking. Savon's documentary "Ovozlar” (Voices) earned a special mention from the international jury at the festival's 70th-anniversary edition held from May 1 to May 6 in Oberhausen, Germany.
The festival, renowned for its rich history and global significance, showcased a diverse array of cinematic talent, with 117 films hailing from 36 countries vying for top honors. Among the select few chosen for the main program of the international competition, Savon's "Ovozlar" stood out as the lone representative from Central Asia, shining a spotlight on Uzbekistan's burgeoning film industry.
Directed by Irina Savon and featuring cinematography by Ulugbek Yakhyaev, "Ovozlar" delves into compelling narratives under the supervision of Ph.D. Macey Drygas from Poland and produced by Maria Musokova. The documentary, presented by the production center of FOCUS film and theater school in Tashkent, explores profound themes within the framework of the FOCUS GRAVITY HUB international creative laboratory, with generous support from the Swiss government in Uzbekistan.
It's worth noting that Uzbekistan became the only country from Central Asia to win this award for the first time in many years.
The film premiered at the KickOff International Film Festival in Warsaw, setting the stage for its subsequent recognition at Oberhausen. While "Voices" secured a special mention, the coveted 8,000-euro Oberhausen City Grand Prix was awarded to "Spring 23," helmed by Chun Er Shi San from China, reflecting the global diversity and caliber of talent showcased at the festival.
In a testament to the collaborative spirit and international outreach of Uzbek cinema, director Irina Savon and producer Maria Musakova proudly presented "Ovozlar" on the festival stage in Germany, drawing acclaim and recognition from industry peers and audiences alike.
The FOCUS film and theater school extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Goethe Institute in Tashkent for its unwavering support, reaffirming the institution's commitment to nurturing and promoting artistic excellence in Uzbekistan's dynamic cultural landscape.
