The Uzbekistan Cinematography Agency revealed its stellar achievements in 2023, showcasing a remarkable surge in both film production and global recognition. With 113 film projects crafted during the year, the production volume soared by an impressive 300% compared to 2017, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported.
Among the notable highlights of the year was the production of films showcasing Uzbekistan's tourism potential in collaboration with Turkish, Russian, American, and Italian partners. Numerous projects in partnership with various ministries and agencies, particularly those focusing on the historical heroes of Uzbekistan, are currently in the implementation stage.
The ambitious global project "Khoja Nasreddin" is underway with the renowned film producer and director Timur Bekmambetov. In tandem with the Russian film company Bazelevs, the first international animation school was established in Tashkent. The "School of Courage" series produced an animated film depicting the inspiring story of Paralympic Games winner and world champion Asila Mirzayarova from the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
A total of 7,920 film events attracted over 1,400,000 participants throughout the year, emphasizing the growing popularity and engagement of the local audience with cinematic experiences.
Uzbekistan's filmmakers made a significant mark on the international stage by participating in 24 film festivals worldwide in 2023. Impressively, they amassed a total of 56 international awards, with 15 of them being the highest accolades in their respective categories.
In a bid to bolster international collaborations, Cinema Days from 11 countries were hosted in Uzbekistan, while Uzbek Film Days were celebrated in 14 countries. The 76th Cannes Film Festival featured a national pavilion for Uzbekistan from May 16-27, fostering connections and showcasing the nation's cinematic prowess on the global stage. The establishment of the CIS Film Organizations Association and the Association of Cinematographers of the Turkic World further solidified Uzbekistan's commitment to international cooperation, with the Uzbekistan Cinematography Agency elected to chair both prestigious organizations.
The XV Tashkent International Film Festival "Pearl of the Silk Road," held from September 29 to October 2, drew more than 300 filmmakers from 52 countries. Over 10 memoranda on collaborative film projects were signed, exemplifying the growing international interest and partnerships.
Uzbekistan's cinematic outreach extended to news media collaborations, with Euronews and CNN. More than 500 newsreels were produced in partnership with Euronews, highlighting the events in the evolving New Uzbekistan. Additionally, a collaboration with CNN resulted in 30 newsreels and a 30-minute documentary titled "Spirit of Samarkand," providing global audiences with an immersive look into the rich cultural tapestry of Uzbekistan.
