In the wake of relentless heavy rains and ensuing floods, Takhar province in Afghanistan has been plunged into chaos, with at least 17 families reported missing and extensive damage to property and agricultural lands, Daryo’s correspondent in Afghanistan reported.
Officials from the Taliban's disaster preparedness department in Takhar province disclosed that the calamitous weather conditions have wreaked havoc in four districts of the region, leading to the disappearance of 17 families. The affected districts include Varsaj, Farkhor, New Qala, and Ishkemesh.
The dire situation escalated on April 28, as torrential downpours continued unabated for the past four days, exacerbating the plight of residents. The calamity struck with particular ferocity in Ishkemesh district, where 10 families, comprising women and children, were swept away by the floods overnight.
Reports indicate that an additional seven families went missing in the districts of New Qala, Kal'a Farkhor, and Varsaj. Despite frantic search efforts, authorities have yet to locate any trace of these missing individuals.
The toll of destruction wrought by natural disasters extends beyond human lives. The Taliban Disaster Preparedness Department in Takhar has lamented the loss of 7,000 hectares of vital agricultural land, the demise of 30 livestock, and the obliteration of 23 residential structures across the affected districts.
Amidst the chaos, the residents of Ishkemesh district find themselves grappling with the aftermath without sufficient aid. Despite the gravity of the situation, pertinent agencies of the Taliban have yet to extend assistance to those in need. Consequently, numerous displaced families are left to fend for themselves, enduring the harsh realities of living in makeshift shelters in the open.
The repercussions of the catastrophic weather have reverberated beyond Takhar province. The Ministry of Natural Disaster Management of the Afghan government has confirmed the loss of at least eight lives, with three individuals sustaining injuries in the latest spate of floods across the nation.
