Turkmenistan is increasing its maritime traffic and is discussing the opening of a regular ferry service from the port of Turkmenbashi to Olya, a port in the Liman district of Astrakhan region of Russia.
According to GTRK Lotos (Russia), Astrakhan Governor Igor Babushkin held a meeting with Turkmen Consul Gadam Ilamanov, who was appointed to the post in March this year. According to information, the Astrakhan region is also negotiating the establishment of a Turkmen logistics centre in the region and the expansion of mutual trade.
"Turkmenistan is one of the region's most important foreign partners. The parties actively cooperate in trade, economic and humanitarian spheres, cooperation in logistics, trade, shipbuilding, education and culture".
It has previously been reported that Astrakhan shipbuilders have built nearly $800mn worth of vessels for Turkmenistan, including drilling platforms.
Experts told Daryo that the logistics centre is to be opened on the territory of the Astrakhan port in the "Lotos" special economic zone. The project is seen as a platform for forwarding and transport companies with favourable customs, brokerage and warehousing services.
The parties are studying the possibility of opening a trading house in Astrakhan interested in buying agricultural products, textiles and industrial goods from Turkmenistan.
