A delegation from Turkmenistan met in Brussels with Stefano Grassi, Head of Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Energy, and Tibor Stelbatsky, Senior Adviser for Energy Diplomacy at the European External Action Service.
According to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry, special emphasis was placed on cooperation in the field of renewable energy sources, reducing methane emissions and natural gas supplies from Turkmenistan.
The Turkmen delegation, which also took part in the meeting of the Turkmen-EU Working Group on Energy, was led by Murad Archaev, Deputy Chairman of the state concern "Turkmengaz".
The parties discussed issues of diversifying Turkmen gas supply routes, opportunities for practical cooperation in the field of reducing methane emissions, as well as tripling renewable energy installations and increasing energy efficiency.
As highlighted, strategies to improve efficiency offer significant opportunities in the context of Turkmenistan's announcement to join the Global Methane Pledge.
According to the press release, the Turkmen side briefed on achievements in the national energy sector, its legal framework, diversification efforts, commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy measures, as well as a solar energy project.
Turkmenistan has the world's fourth largest proven natural gas reserves. Its main importers are China, Russia and Uzbekistan.
Experts told Daryo that the Trans-Caspian project to Europe could be on the agenda during Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's planned visit to EU headquarters.
The project to build a 300km gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan became relevant after the EU decided to wean itself off its critical dependence on Gazprom because of the situation in Ukraine.
Turkmenistan, for its part, already built a 700km linear gas pipeline to the Caspian Sea coast in 2015, starting at Galkynysh. Ashgabat said at the time that it was ready to supply Europe with up to 30-40bn cubic metres of gas a year.
