Turkmenistan may join the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Local television Altyn Asyr reports that the proposal was made at a government meeting.
This convention is a unique international legal document aimed at preserving the planet's biodiversity.
More than 180 countries are parties to the convention. Its list includes more than 33,000 species of animals and plants, many of which are found in Turkmenistan.
"The accession of our country to this convention will create an opportunity for more effective protection of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna".
At the same time, a proposal for Turkmenistan's participation in the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA) was submitted for consideration. It is also proposed to sign a memorandum of cooperation in the field of wildlife protection on the Ustyurt plateau between the relevant ministries of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
