Türkiye has officially revoked the visa-free regime for citizens of Tajikistan. The decision, detailed in an official publication from the president's office, specifically targets Tajik citizens holding foreign passports who intend to travel to Türkiye.
The decision, which came into immediate effect upon its announcement, was made under the authority of the Law "On Foreigners and International Protection." This decision marks a departure from the previous arrangement, wherein citizens of Tajikistan enjoyed the privilege of staying in Türkiye for up to 90 days without needing a visa, a policy that had been in place since 2018.
While the specific reasons behind the revocation were not explicitly stated in the announcement, it coincides with heightened security concerns in the region. The decision follows a series of security measures taken by Türkiye in response to recent terrorist activities, particularly in the wake of the March 22 terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in the Moscow region.
The attack, which was claimed by supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), prompted Türkiye to intensify its efforts against individuals associated with terrorist organizations. Reports from the Hürriyet newspaper indicate that among those arrested in recent raids were a 37-year-old Tajik citizen named Faziljon A. and a 41-year-old Kyrgyz citizen named Zulfiya S. These individuals were allegedly involved in plotting an attack within Türkiye, with the Tajik individual, operating under the pseudonym "Abu Ismail," designated to carry out the attack, aided by the Kyrgyz woman.
Both Faziljon A. and Zulfiya S. have been identified as long-time members of ISIS, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by the terrorist organization in the region. The decision to revoke the visa-free regime for Tajik citizens traveling to Türkiye is seen as part of the broader efforts to bolster security measures and prevent potential terrorist activities within Turkish borders.
ISIS has been recognized as a terrorist organization by numerous countries and international bodies, including Türkiye.
