In a move aimed at enhancing its global trade and protecting intellectual property rights, Uzbekistan has officially joined The Hague Agreement Concerning the International Deposit of Industrial Designs, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported. This decision was made evident as a draft law regarding the accession of Uzbekistan to the Geneva Act of The Hague Agreement concerning the international registration of industrial designs was passed by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
The Hague Agreement, which regulates the international registration of industrial designs, operates as a centralized system allowing for the acquisition and maintenance of rights to an industrial design by filing a single international application. This application can then be extended to any number of countries that are signatories to the agreement. More than 70 countries, including those within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Baltic region, are part of the Geneva Act of The Hague Agreement.
Under the provisions of The Hague Agreement, industrial designs are protected according to the legislation of the country in which they are registered, for a minimum duration of five years from the date of international registration. This framework provides advantages for entities seeking to promote their products internationally, particularly in foreign markets.
The decision to join The Hague Agreement comes as Uzbekistan aims to streamline its procedures for registering industrial designs, making them more convenient for manufacturers seeking to expand their reach beyond domestic borders. By acceding to the Geneva Act of The Hague Agreement, Uzbekistan now offers its residents a simplified system for registering industrial designs across multiple countries participating in the agreement.
This move underscores Uzbekistan's commitment to fostering innovation, protecting intellectual property rights, and facilitating international trade. It is expected to provide a boost to the country's manufacturing sector by offering greater ease of access to foreign markets and encouraging the development of innovative products.
