President Mirziyoyev champions sports development in Uzbekistan
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan presided over a presentation focusing on the advancement of weightlifting and football infrastructure within local communities, known as mahallas. Acknowledging the pivotal role sports play in fostering healthy lifestyles and meaningful engagement for the youth, the president emphasized the significance of mass participation in sporting activities, press service of the president reported on March 15.
Central to the development strategy is the elevation of Olympic sports, with particular emphasis on weightlifting. As part of the State Program for the Implementation of the Strategy "Uzbekistan - 2030" in the "Year of Support for Youth and Business," plans are underway to establish a dedicated Weightlifting Center in Chirchik. This institution, slated to commence operations in the 2025/2026 academic year, will serve as a specialized educational hub for students in grades 7-11. Designed to nurture young talent, the center will employ advanced training methodologies to groom aspiring athletes for national teams.
Furthermore, collaboration with the Council of the Federation of Trade Unions will facilitate the establishment of weightlifting sports clubs across regions, including the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Namangan, Tashkent, and Samarkand regions. A comprehensive three-year program aims to bolster youth interest in weightlifting, enhance regional infrastructure, modernize talent identification processes, engage foreign expertise, and foster best practices.
In a bid to popularize weightlifting, a series of competitions, including the Central Asian Championship and the Uzbekistan Open Championship, are slated to take place.
Concurrently, efforts to bolster football infrastructure in mahallas are underway. Leveraging existing stadiums and sports grounds, plans include the construction of new facilities through public-private partnerships. The establishment of men's and women's mahalla teams across age groups will further galvanize community engagement. Additionally, promising young footballers will be channeled into professional institutions to nurture their talent.
The implementation of a school football leader election system, modeled after the English School Football Association, and the introduction of the "Mahalla League" and the "Cup of the State Security Service" are aimed at cultivating a robust football culture and talent pipeline.
