Uzbekistan's FC Bunyodkor to pay Rivaldo and Denilson €9.2 mn - FIFA
The Disciplinary Committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) has ruled on a long-standing financial dispute between Uzbek club Bunyodkor and Brazilian footballers Rivaldo and Denilson, who graced the Tashkent club's roster in the late 2010s. The ruling, delivered on February 22, mandates Bunyodkor to settle a substantial debt to the former players, marking a significant chapter in the legal battle that has spanned years.
The breakdown of the financial obligations includes unpaid salaries, bonuses, and compensation for contract termination, totaling millions in euros and dollars. Rivaldo, a decorated football icon and former Ballon d'Or winner, is owed €8.16 mn, while Denilson's dues amount to €1.11 mn. Bunyodkor has been granted a 30-day window by FIFA to settle the outstanding amounts, failing which the organization threatens to impose "appropriate measures." Additionally, the Tashkent club has been slapped with a fine of 30 thousand Swiss francs.
The legal case traces back to Rivaldo's tenure with Bunyodkor, during which he encountered financial discrepancies and non-payment of wages. Despite facing adversity, Rivaldo exhibited resilience and continued to support his fellow players by personally funding their salaries. His decision to pursue legal recourse underscores the gravity of the situation and his determination to seek justice for himself and his teammates.
In an interview with Sporting Intelligence, Rivaldo lamented the demise of his ambitious plans for Bunyodkor's development into a global football powerhouse. He recounted his efforts to elevate the club's stature by facilitating interactions with European football giants and enhancing training standards. However, financial irregularities and administrative challenges thwarted his vision, culminating in a protracted legal battle for rightful compensation.
