The renowned fast food chain, McDonald’s, is slated to make its debut in Uzbekistan. The company completed its registration with the state services system on March 11. The first McDonald's restaurant is scheduled to open in Tashkent, while the exact date of the grand launch is yet unknown.
Six years ago, there were talks in Uzbekistan regarding the opening of large food service chains such as McDonald's and Starbucks. These companies were originally scheduled to open in the Charvak free tourism zone. According to a Cabinet of Ministers resolution, these restaurants were supposed to open in January 2019.
Uzbekistan's Former Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Bakhtiyor Ibragimov, stated that McDonald's attempted to enter the state's market 20-25 years prior, at a time when the environment and conditions were extremely different.
The key requirement for McDonald's to join the Uzbek market was access to high-quality products for food preparation, a necessity that the country was unable to provide.
According to Timurmalik Elmuradov, an analyst and R&D specialist, the company has stringent requirements for all its products, even something as basic as salt. The entire supply chain must be official and transparent, which poses a significant challenge for Uzbekistan. McDonald’s insists on having complete knowledge and visibility of all processes, right from the cultivation of the grain that eventually becomes flour for their buns.
Furthermore, only suppliers who underwent special certification and are prepared for audits at any given time are permitted to collaborate.
