With a total compensation of UZS 533.7mn ($42,424) imposed for damages inflicted upon the atmosphere, Angren IES (Angren thermal power plant) found itself under scrutiny as the Tashkent regional department of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change conducted an extensive inspection of its operations. This inspection aimed to evaluate the environmental impact of the power plant, focusing on emissions released into the atmosphere.
During the inspection, analytical samples were taken from various sources within the facility. The results revealed alarming levels of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, far surpassing permissible limits. Carbon monoxide levels in source 1 were found to be 4.37 times higher than the standard, while nitrogen oxide levels in both source 1 and source 3 exceeded the norm by 7.68 and 15.24 times, respectively.
Consequently, the authorities took decisive action. An additional compensation payment of UZS 140.8mn ($11,192) was imposed for exceeding atmospheric emission standards in the 4th quarter of 2023 and January-February 2024. Furthermore, discrepancies were identified in previous compensation calculations, where the efficiency of the enterprise's dust and gas cleaning equipment had not been adequately considered. This prompted a reassessment, resulting in total compensation of UZS 533.7mn ($42,424) for damages inflicted upon the atmosphere.
In addition, Angren IES employee D.M. faced legal repercussions under Article 197, Part 6 of the Criminal Procedure Code for obstructing the investigation. Documents are currently being prepared to initiate legal proceedings against the individual.
This is not the first instance of environmental violations associated with Angren IES. Previous inspections revealed similar findings, indicating that harmful emissions exceeded established standards, and the equipment for mitigating pollution did not meet regulatory requirements.
