Renowned historian Ikhtiyor Esonov has shed light on the mysterious disappearance of the Bukhara Emir's wealth in his recent article published in "Mushtum" magazine. As per Esonov, the last emir of Bukhara, Said Olimkhan, absconded with an astonishing 10 tons of gold from the treasury following his dethronement in 1920.
Speculations and Documentation
Various legends have circulated regarding the vast wealth of the Bukhara emir and its ultimate fate. However, Esonov delves into historical documents compiled by the Red Bolsheviks during that era, providing insights into the magnitude of the emir's fortune and its eventual dispersal.
The compiled documents offer a detailed inventory of the emir's treasures, including an array of valuable items such as precious orders, diamonds of various sizes, gold artifacts, watches, coins, and an assortment of jewels. The meticulously documented list spans 48 pages, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the opulence of the Bukhara Emirate.
Magnitude of Wealth
Esonov's research indicates that the total estimated value of the Bukhara Emirate's wealth, including the assets documented by the Bolsheviks, amounted to approximately $103mn at the time. Translated into today's currency, this staggering sum equates to around $1.4bn, underscoring the immense wealth amassed by the emir's dynasty.
Said Mir Muhammad Alim Khan, the final ruler of the Bukhara Emirate, ascended to power in 1910 and reigned until 1920. Following the occupation of Bukhara by the Red Army, the emir sought refuge in the east of the emirate and later fled to Afghanistan, where he resided until his passing in 1944. It is believed that many of his descendants now reside in various countries, including the USA, Turkey, Germany, Afghanistan, and others.
