Around 550 miners are currently being held hostage in a gold mine in South Africa, as reported by Eyewitness News.
The incident occurred at the East Modderfontein mine near Springs. According to Gold One, the company that owns the mine, not all night shift workers have returned from the mine.
It is suspected that the miners have been taken hostage by activists from a construction workers' union. However, the details of their demands have not been disclosed. The union has denied any involvement but has promised to investigate the incident.
Currently, the police have surrounded the mine. Gold mining in South Africa often takes place at significant depths, sometimes reaching depths of over 2 kilometers. The exact depth at which the hostages are located has not been reported.
