In January 2024, Uzbekistan’s major enterprises manufactured 627,900 tonnes of cement, marking a 2.3-fold increase compared to the same period in the previous year, the Statistics Agency reported.
The substantial production growth can be attributed to the challenging conditions of 2023. During this period, numerous enterprises across the republic were unable to operate at full capacity due to extreme cold weather and power shortages, impacting not only cement production but also the output of other goods.
The production of cement in January 2023 was more than halved. Consequently, the 2.3-fold surge in 2024 signifies a return to the production levels of 2021, a year that also witnessed a decline. In 2021, 619,100 tonnes of cement were produced. The data for 2024 indicates that the enterprises managed to augment production by a modest 1.4%.
Despite the recovery in production, the industry continues to face increasing competition. Currently, 36 plants are operating in the country. The growing supply in the market is exerting downward pressure on prices. In the previous year, the average cost per tonne at the Uzbek Commodity Exchange dropped to 500,000-550,000, and it is projected to be 650,000-670,000 in 2022.
