Advertising restrictions to be lifted for imported alcohol in Uzbekistan

Advertising restrictions to be lifted for imported alcohol in Uzbekistan

Advertising restrictions on imported alcohol will be lifted from January 1, 2025, following Shavkat Mirziyoyev signing amendments to the national legislation in coordination with agreements with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The amended law removes restrictions on advertising imported beer, natural, and sparkling wines. Previously, only domestic beer and wine were permitted for promotion under specific conditions.

Other important changes to the legislation include:

    • Use of Patents: Specific circumstances have been outlined wherein the government may allow the use of patents without the permission of the owner, with provisions for compensation.
    • Compulsory Licensing: Provisions have been made for obtaining compulsory licenses for the use of industrial property objects, with norms set for compensatory payments to patent owners.
    • Dispute Resolution: Clarifications regarding the burden of proof in disputes arising from patented methods have been provided.
    • Trademark Registration: The statute of limitations for canceling registered trademarks due to unfair competition has been eliminated.
    • Equal Opportunity: Equal opportunities for domestic and foreign applicants in the state registration of intellectual property objects have been ensured, with unified patent duty amounts for non-residents and residents.

While changes related to state duties and alcohol advertising are set to take effect from January 1, 2025, other amendments come into force upon publication.

Earlier, it was reported that Shavkat Mirziyoyev has endorsed a law introducing amendments to legislative acts in connection with alterations to the tax and budget policies. Specifically, the excise tax on domestically produced ethyl alcohol will double, reaching UZS 14,900 ($1.21) per liter. This comes after a fivefold increase at the beginning of 2023.

Furthermore, excise taxes on certain types of alcoholic beverages will see a 5% hike from July 1. Simultaneously, tariffs for imported alcohol have once again been reduced by approximately 5%.
