Japanese Mitsubishi Power to provide 600 MW GTCC turbine for plant in Uzbekistan

Japanese Mitsubishi Power to provide 600 MW GTCC turbine for plant in Uzbekistan

Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, (MHI), has secured an order for advanced power generation equipment for the construction of the third facility at the Navoi Power Plant (Navoi 3) in Uzbekistan. This order includes state-of-the-art equipment such as the M701JAC (J-series Air-Cooled) gas turbine, marking the third collaboration between Mitsubishi Power and Thermal Power Plants, the state electric power corporation of Uzbekistan, MHI reported on February 13.

The planned system, based on a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC), aims to generate 600 megawatts (MW) of electric power and 200 Gcal/h of heat, with commercial operations slated to commence in 2026.

The Navoi Power Plant, strategically located approximately 360 km southwest of Tashkent, has been a focal point for Mitsubishi Power's endeavors in Uzbekistan. Having previously supplied GTCC power generation equipment for Navoi 1 and Navoi 2, which commenced operations in 2013 and 2019 respectively, Mitsubishi Power's involvement underscores its commitment to bolstering the country's energy infrastructure. Navoi 3, like its predecessors, will utilize gas-fired GTCC power generation to cater to the region's electricity needs while providing industrial steam and district heating to the Navoi Free Economic Zone (Navoi FEZ).

In addition to supplying gas and steam turbines, Mitsubishi Power will oversee the design, procurement, manufacture, and commissioning of core components and major auxiliary equipment, including air-cooled condensers and gas compressors. The generator, integral to the project, will be manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

Mitsubishi Power's extensive portfolio in Uzbekistan includes several orders for large-scale gas turbines, with the latest project marking the 13th such order and the fifth for a JAC series gas turbine. This track record has solidified Mitsubishi Power's position as a dominant player in the Uzbek market, boasting a market share of approximately 90% for large-scale gas turbines. Moreover, the company has actively supported Uzbekistan's diverse power and heating needs, evidenced by its involvement in projects like the construction of a city-based distributed natural gas-fired cogeneration facility in Tashkent.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has a storied history dating back to 1884 when Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works was established by founder Yataro Iwasaki. Despite facing challenges such as the dissolution of zaibatsu after World War II, MHI persevered and consolidated its operations in 1964. Today, MHI remains a key player in various sectors, contributing to technological advancements and economic growth worldwide. With a legacy built on innovation and excellence, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries continues to be a symbol of Japan's industrial prowess.
