Four Armenian soldiers lost their lives in a border clash with Azeri forces, with an additional soldier reported wounded. The event occurred in the southern region of Syunik. This is the first reported act of violence on the border since peace talks began last year, intending to resolve the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Both nations involved in the conflict, Armenia and Azerbaijan, attributed the initiation of the incident to the other party on February 13.
Armenia’s Defence Ministry reported that Azerbaijani armed forces opened fire towards Armenian combat positions near the village of Nerkin Hand. In response, Azerbaijan stated it had initiated a “revenge operation”, alleging that Armenian forces had earlier fired across the border.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence claimed that Armenian forces had targeted its troop positions along a northwestern section of the border, approximately 300km from Nerkin Hand. Armenia, however, denied any such incident.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region in the South Caucasus, has been ongoing for more than three decades. Both nations claimed the region following the fall of the Russian Empire in 1917 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The region has remained a point of contention, with wars over the region occurring in the 1990s and again in 2020. Last year, Azerbaijan captured the region in a swift offensive.
