In a recent statement, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting minister of internal affairs of the Taliban, conveyed the group's willingness to patiently await recognition from the United States, expressing a readiness to endure a decade-long wait if necessary, Tasnim News reported.
Haqqani emphasized that while recognition from the United States would be welcomed, it is not a prerequisite for the Taliban's legitimacy.
"It would be good if America recognizes our government, but it doesn't matter if it doesn't," Haqqani remarked during a press conference.
The Taliban official acknowledged that certain conditions must be met before the world is ready to extend recognition to the Taliban-led government. However, he asserted that the responsibility does not solely lie with the United States, noting that the Taliban's expulsion of American forces from Afghanistan and the subsequent establishment of independence have shaped the current landscape.
"If America doesn't recognize us now, it's not their fault, because we forced the Americans out of Afghanistan and gained independence," Haqqani added.
This statement comes in the wake of China's formal establishment of diplomatic relations with the Taliban, making it the first nation to do so at the highest level. Bilal Karimi, former deputy press secretary of the Taliban, has been appointed as the ambassador of Afghanistan to China, signaling growing international engagement with the Taliban-led government.
About Taliban
The Taliban, a predominantly Pashtun Islamic fundamentalist group, rose to power in Afghanistan in 2021 following a two-decade insurgency. After the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, the Taliban regrouped in Pakistan and gradually reclaimed territory, culminating in their return to power in August 2021 as the U.S. withdrew its remaining troops as per a 2020 peace agreement.
Despite promises to uphold the rights of women, religious, and ethnic minority communities, the Taliban have imposed a strict interpretation of Islamic law. As the group transitions from insurgency to governance, challenges persist, including the provision of food supplies and economic opportunities for Afghans.
