Mogfurullah Shahob, the son of the Taliban’s Minister of Mines and Oil, has been appointed as the ambassador to Uzbekistan. This appointment was reported by Sputnik Afghanistan and marks a significant development in the diplomatic relations between the Taliban and other nations.
Appointment Amidst Internal Prohibitions
Interestingly, this appointment comes despite the Taliban leader, Haibatullah Akhundzoda, having issued a decree prohibiting officials from hiring their relatives in state institutions. This decree was aimed at preventing nepotism within the government and ensuring that positions are filled based on merit rather than familial connections.
Replacement of Previous Ambassador
Shahob replaces Ahmed Khalid Elimi, the ambassador of the previous Afghan government in Tashkent. Elimi had worked under the supervision of the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more than two and a half years. His tenure ended recently, paving the way for Shahob’s appointment.
Taliban’s Diplomatic Appointments
The Taliban had previously appointed an ambassador to China, making Uzbekistan the second country where the interim government of Afghanistan has appointed its ambassador. In September 2023, the Chinese government became the first in the world to appoint its ambassador to Kabul after the Taliban came to power.
