The Taliban and Uzbekistan are gearing up to inaugurate the railway stations “Naibabad” and “Port-5” located in Balkh province, Sputnik reports. This development was discussed in a remote negotiation between Bakht ar-Rahman Sharafat, the head of the Taliban railway department, and Khusniddin Khosilov, the chief engineer of Uzbekistan Railways.
A technical delegation of 80 specialists is expected to arrive from Uzbekistan, for whom the Taliban will provide tourist visas and ensure security.
Trans-Afghan Railway Project Meeting
Representatives of the Taliban have been invited to a meeting on the Trans-Afghan railway project scheduled for tomorrow in Tashkent. The meeting will see the participation of Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Qatar, with the latter being considered for financing the project.
The Trans-Afghan railway project, first proposed in December 2018 by Uzbekistan, aims to extend the Afghan rail network from Mazar-e-Sharif to Kabul and then to Nangarhar province, where the railway would cross the Torkham border and run into Pakistan via Peshawar. The railway line is planned to be 573 km long.
Contract with Mansour Fateh
The launch of the aforementioned stations falls within the scope of a contract that the Uzbek side managed to secure from the Kazakh company Mansour Fateh. The contract to manage the Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif railway was signed with Mansour Fateh, a Kazakhstani company. The company will manage technical issues for the railway.
