In a move aimed at fostering closer ties and enhancing bilateral cooperation, a delegation from the Brest region of the Republic of Belarus paid a visit to Bukhara, Uzbekistan, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported. The visit witnessed a series of fruitful engagements aimed at exploring avenues for collaboration across various sectors.
During their visit, the delegation members had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with several key entities driving economic development in Bukhara. Among these were the Siyovush Textile Bukhara company, situated in the Kagan district within the Gijduvan Free Economic Zone (FEZ), along with the Bukhara Cotton Textile and Bukhara Agro Cluster DZZ in Bukhara city. Additionally, they visited Bukhara-Varnet in Bukhara district and the Bukhara Regional Multidisciplinary Medical Center, gaining valuable insights into the region's economic and healthcare landscape.
The head of the Bukhara region, Hokim Botir Zaripov, warmly received the delegation members and highlighted the significance of their visit in strengthening the historical ties between Uzbekistan and Belarus. A pivotal agreement on cooperation across trade-economic, scientific-technical, and cultural-humanitarian spheres was signed between the Bukhara region's Hokimiyat and the Brest Regional Executive Committee during this landmark visit, signifying a new chapter in regional partnership.
Statistics reveal a substantial surge in bilateral trade between Bukhara and Belarus, with the mutual foreign trade turnover reaching $9.4mn in 2023. Export volumes amounted to $2mn, while imports stood at $9.1mn, marking 112% increase compared to the previous year. Both parties aim to further boost this figure to $1bn, reflecting the ambitious goals set for future economic cooperation.
Discussions during the visit encompassed various aspects of bilateral trade-economic partnership, investment prospects, and avenues for socio-economic collaboration. Emphasis was placed on enhancing investment opportunities and deepening relations between the two regions, laying the groundwork for sustained growth and mutual prosperity.
In reaffirmation of their commitment to fostering closer ties, agreements were inked in the realms of trade-economic cooperation, investment, and healthcare. Additionally, a Memorandum of Cooperation between the cities of Bukhara and Brest was signed, underlining the shared commitment to nurturing multifaceted collaboration across cultural, economic, and social domains.
Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Dmitry Gorodetsky, Deputy Chairperson of the Brest Region Executive Committee, underscored the pivotal role of mutually beneficial cooperation in preserving the spirit of friendship and harmony between the regions. He reiterated the Brest region's keen interest in further expanding and diversifying collaborative endeavors for mutual benefit.
On February 8, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko held important discussions, joined by official delegations from both countries. The talks were focused on strengthening the strong partnership between the two nations and outlining new avenues for cooperation that benefit both parties. There was satisfaction expressed regarding the positive progress in trade and economic collaboration, highlighted by a significant 15% rise in trade volume last year. The government's objective is to surpass the $1bn milestone in trade volume in the upcoming years, supported by initiatives such as the establishment of a joint foreign trade company and improvements in export-import delivery mechanisms.
