Since the start of 2024, a total of 9,507 children in Uzbekistan have contracted Hepatitis A, an acute infectious disease affecting liver cells. This report comes directly from the Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health Service’s press service.
The incidence of the disease has notably increased in several regions, including Andijan, Bukhara, Namangan, Surkhandarya, Samarkand, Ferghana regions, and Karakalpakstan.
Over the past 12 months, a commendable total of 365,167 children have been vaccinated against Hepatitis A in the country. Vaccination is a crucial preventive measure, effectively preventing transmission of the virus in 94-98% of cases. Importantly, no serious complications have been observed post-vaccination.
Globally, the incidence of Hepatitis A has seen a rise of 13.9% from 139.54 mn in 1990 to 158.94 mn in 2019. Despite this increase in cases, the age-standardized mortality rate has seen a decrease, indicating progress in managing the disease. However, the disease’s impact varies across regions, with significant increases in incidence rates observed in high-income Asia Pacific, Oceania, and Australasia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2016, 7,134 persons died from Hepatitis A worldwide, accounting for 0.5% of the mortality due to viral hepatitis. The disease occurs sporadically and in epidemics worldwide, with a tendency for cyclic recurrences.
