Kazakhstan has experienced a renewal of its 36-year temperature record, marking an extraordinary winter season. Tengrinews reports indicate that the second month of winter exhibited unusual warmth coupled with significant precipitation, creating a climatic dichotomy. The Kazgidromet reported an average air temperature anomaly ranging from 1° C to 13° C above the norm during the second month of winter. Notably, several temperature records were shattered against this backdrop.
January highlights:
1. Mangistau Region (Akkuduk): On January 1, the daytime air temperature soared to +11.1° C, breaking the previous record set in 2003 (+8.9° C).
2. Aktau: January 8 saw a record-breaking afternoon temperature of +11.1 degrees Celsius, surpassing the 1988 record of +4.7° C.
3. Semey: January 10 witnessed a temperature of +6.3° C, setting a new record since 1988.
4. Pavlodar: The maximum air temperature reached +3.1° C, breaking the 2018 record.
5. Balkhash: On the same day, the afternoon temperature climbed to +7.1° C, surpassing the 1988 record of +1.2° C.
6. Almaty: Experiencing almost spring-like conditions, Almaty recorded a maximum air temperature of +11.3° C on January 11, breaking the 2001 record of +10.9° C.
While the southern regions of Kazakhstan enjoyed nearly spring-like temperatures, the latter part of January witnessed the arrival of cold air masses from Western Siberia and the Arctic seas, resulting in frosty conditions in the northern half of the country.
Precipitation and climatic variations
Throughout the month, the northern half of the country experienced frequent snowfalls, occasionally heavy, contrasting with rains observed in the southern half. The eastern part of the country witnessed precipitation levels surpassing the monthly norm.
In Astana, the temperature background exceeded the climatic norm by 2.6° C. Notably, the highest temperature of +1.2° C was observed on January 10, while the lowest plummeted to -28.4° C on January 16. Precipitation for the month totalled 45 mm, significantly surpassing the monthly norm of 18 mm.
