In a step towards enhancing environmental sustainability, Uzbekistan has embarked on a pioneering project, "Yashil Makon" (Green Space), aiming to digitize and certify the nation's trees, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported. The initiative, in line with the presidential decree of November 23, 2023, has successfully completed its first phase, with over 250 mn trees already accounted for and mapped across the country.
The meticulous process involves a three-stage certification procedure, deploying cutting-edge technologies and international best practices. Initially, aerial imagery was utilized to count the trees. Subsequently, a comprehensive database was established, capturing crucial details such as tree type, age, height, condition, and precise coordinates.
In the third and final stage, each tree was assigned a unique identification number and a digital passport through the "Yashil Makon" electronic platform. This platform, a pivotal component of the project, has undergone continuous improvement to streamline the certification process.
The extensive mapping project took inspiration from global experiences, studying successful initiatives in the United States, Canada, China, India, Australia, Russia, Germany, and Japan. The Research Institute of Environment and Nature Conservation Technologies, operating under the Ministry of Ecology, played a crucial role, in employing satellite images, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and artificial intelligence.
Emphasizing a focus on young trees, aged five years and below, the digital mapping project covered the entire territory of Uzbekistan. With 254 mn trees identified and mapped, the country now possesses a comprehensive digital map detailing its green spaces.
Simultaneously, the "Yashil Makon" electronic platform has been refined to facilitate tree registration. Inspectors equipped with tablets are utilizing a newly introduced tree register. This register captures essential data, including photos, tree type, diameter, condition, coordinates, and the responsible organization.
As of now, more than 200,000 trees have been registered on the platform, and the information is accessible to the public. The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change affirms that the progress of tree registration can be tracked through the dedicated website yashilmakon.eco.
The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan has taken a decisive step to implement effective parliamentary control over the national project "green space." In response to the priority tasks set by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a "road map" has been approved for organized and efficient project implementation. Political party factions are instructed to educate constituents about the significance of the "green space" initiative, actively participate in related activities, and ensure substantial parliamentary and public oversight. This decision reflects the government's commitment to transparency, public engagement, and the successful execution of the national "green space" project.
