Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, has instructed Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov to resolve the issue of phasing out Ai-80 gasoline by 2025. This move is in line with the global trend towards cleaner and more efficient fuels, the president's press service reports.
The Current State of Ai-80 Gasoline
Ai-80 gasoline, a lower octane fuel, has already been banned in many countries, including Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which are full importers of oil products. Currently, only Uzbekistan and Afghanistan continue to use Ai-80 gasoline in the region. In Uzbekistan, the daily demand for gasoline surges from around 5,000 tons to 8,000 tons during colder periods, with Ai-80 accounting for a significant portion.
The Plan for Phasing Out Ai-80
The Ministry of Energy in Uzbekistan has announced plans to phase out the production of Ai-80 gasoline by 2025. The Fergana oil refinery, which has scaled up the production of Ai-80 gasoline by more than 50% in winter, producing an average of 800 tons per day, will stop the production of Ai-80 by 2025.
By 2026, the Bukhara oil refinery will be completely transferred to the production of higher quality fuel. The Bukhara oil refinery, which currently produces a significant portion of Ai-80, is set to undergo modernization at a preliminary cost of $553mn, with the final goal of reaching a processing capacity of 2.5mn tons of oil and gas condensate.
