The United Kingdom and Uzbekistan have recognized the potential to expand their cooperation in financial and technological fields. This was discussed in a meeting between Tanzila Narbaeva, the Chairwoman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, and Lord Tariq Ahmad, the Minister for South Asia, the United Nations and the Commonwealth at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
Trade and Economic Cooperation
The parties emphasized the importance of using practical mechanisms and initiatives, noting that joint projects should be implemented through the appointment of trade representatives. They considered issues of developing ties in trade, economic, investment, banking, financial, cultural, and humanitarian areas.
GSP Enhanced Status for Uzbekistan
Lord Tariq Ahmad noted that Uzbekistan has been given the status of a beneficiary of the expanded scheme of the generalized system of preferences (GSP Enhanced). This status focuses on the prospects of increasing exports of products in demand on the British market.
Tashkent International Investment Forum
Tanzila Narbaeva invited representatives of the British business community to the Tashkent International Investment Forum, which will be held in the spring of 2024.
Particular attention was paid to further deepening cooperation in the field of education. The practical aspects of opening branches of leading British universities in Uzbekistan and attracting qualified teachers were considered.
Climate Change Cooperation
Considering that the issue of climate change is on the agenda of all countries today, an exchange of views took place on establishing close cooperation in this direction. This includes combating drought and water scarcity, as well as implementing joint projects to improve the efficiency of water resource management.
Tourism Cooperation
Uzbekistan plans to increase the flow of tourists from the UK. An agreement was reached to send 2,500 British travelers to Uzbekistan in 2024. It is also planned to promote the tourism potential of Uzbekistan at the Destinations – the Holiday and Travel show fair, which will be held in early February in London, and to hold the exhibition “Uzbekistan - Your Next Destination” for British travel companies and media representatives.
