President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Kuanyshbek Yessekeev, Chairman of the Board of Kazakhtelecom on January 25, to discuss the telecommunications company's performance in 2023 and its upcoming initiatives, Akorda reported.
During the meeting, President Tokayev received a comprehensive report on Kazakhtelecom's achievements and plans for the future. Notably, he was briefed on the progress of implementing his instructions to accelerate the deployment of the 5G network by the end of 2025. Yessekeev reported that the company has developed a plan for the construction of over 7,000 base stations, making Kazakhtelecom the first and only company in the CIS to introduce 5G technology into commercial operation.
The report also highlighted efforts to enhance service quality, including plans to transfer 63,000 subscribers from outdated copper lines to modern optical ones. Additionally, 50,000 customers are set to have their modems replaced with equipment featuring improved technical characteristics.
President Tokayev was updated on the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic communication line project, connecting Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan along the Caspian Sea bottom. This initiative is expected to boost international traffic transit through Kazakhstan, positioning the country as a key regional telecommunications hub.
Emphasizing the importance of digitalization, President Tokayev stressed how new telecommunication technologies play a crucial role in determining Kazakhstan's competitiveness on the global stage. He underlined the need to ensure that all citizens have access to modern telecommunications services and urged the timely implementation of all Kazakhtelecom's investment projects.
Kazakhtelecom, established on June 17, 1994, holds the status of the national telecommunications operator in Kazakhstan. With main offices in Astana and Almaty, and regional offices across the country, Kazakhtelecom consistently ranks among the most profitable enterprises in Kazakhstan, boasting an annual turnover in the tens of billions of tenge. The company owns the National Information Superhighway, a fiber-optic ring connecting major cities in Kazakhstan with high-speed data transmission.
