In contrast, Arnold drew attention to the limited representation of Australian players in the A-League, with only four Socceroos—Joe Gauci, Bruno Fornaroli, Lawrence Thomas, and Aziz Behich—currently playing in the Australian domestic league.
On January 23, the Socceroos secured the top spot in their Asian Cup group but faced a confidence setback with a lackluster 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan. Despite already securing a place in the round of 16, Australia aimed for a win or draw to finish at the top of Group B at Doha's Al Janoub Stadium. Martin Boyle's penalty kick in the first minute of injury time, controversially awarded after a VAR review for a handball on Odiljon Hamrobekov, provided Australia with a crucial lead. Several lineup changes were implemented after the 1-0 win against Syria, including Riley McGree injecting creativity into the attack. Inexperienced Kusini Yengi replaced the injured Mitch Duke upfront.
