The Senate of Uzbekistan is aligning its laws with WTO agreements, a move that will diversify the market with new products, according to the Senate press service, Uretail.uz reported. Changes to the “On Advertising” law will lift restrictions on advertising foreign-produced beer, and natural and sparkling wines, fostering market competition.
Amendments to law on inventions, utility models and industrial designs
Specific amendments to the law “On Inventions, Utility Models and Industrial Designs” are being made to ensure the practical implementation of inventions or utility models. These amendments are expected to stimulate the production of new types of products and fill the market.
Additional rules to law on medicines and pharmaceutical activities
Following WTO agreements, additional rules are being introduced into the Law “On Medicines and Pharmaceutical Activities”. These rules aim to protect the rights of manufacturers of original medicines by introducing a mechanism for the effective protection of data obtained as a result of preclinical and clinical trials in pharmaceutical activities.
Amendments to law on state duty
Amendments are being made to the Law “On State Duty” to ensure equal business activities for both enterprises with foreign investment and domestic enterprises. Specifically, the state duty rate for state registration of enterprises with foreign investment is being reduced from 10 times to 1 times the base calculated value.
Harmonisation of state fee amounts with WTO requirements
The amounts of the state fee for applying for a patent, conducting a formal examination, and publishing information on the legal protection of inventions, utility models, and industrial designs are being harmonised with the requirements of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. This move aligns Uzbekistan’s intellectual property laws with international standards.
Accelerating process of becoming WTO member
Senators believe that the adoption of this law will accelerate the process of Uzbekistan becoming a member of the WTO. Earlier reports indicate that the WTO is confident in Uzbekistan’s early accession to the organisation, with the Director General expressing high appreciation for the measures taken by the country.
