In 2023, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Ecology installed 200 cameras, leading to the detection of over 6,500 environmental violations, as reported by Nazir Umarov, a chief specialist at the ministry. The violators were penalized under Article 91 of the Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Administrative Responsibility.
This article pertains to the violation of environmental requirements in the collection, transportation, disposal, neutralisation, storage, utilisation, processing, and sale of industrial, household and other wastes. The cameras were installed in Andijan, Namangan, Surkhandarya, Syrdarya and Tashkent regions, as well as in Tashkent city.
Expansion of surveillance program
In the upcoming years, the ministry plans to increase the number of cameras to 1,000 to record violations in the regions. This initiative aligns with a decree signed by the President of Uzbekistan, which permits the use of surveillance cameras, initially installed to record traffic violations, to monitor non-compliance with environmental standards.
Entrepreneurs empowered to report violations
Earlier, Daryo reported that these cameras record not only rubbish dumping in inappropriate places but also other violations of the law. This allows for the prompt elimination of environmental violations and timely legal action.
