The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan made a statement regarding the presidential elections held in Taiwan. The statement says that Uzbekistan is closely monitoring the situation related to the elections held in Taiwan.
"We reiterate our firm support for the principle of 'One China' and that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of China, and Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory," the ministry said in a statement. It was noted that Uzbekistan is a firm supporter of the peaceful development of relations between the two coasts and supports all efforts of the PRC government to unify China.
Taiwan's presidential election was held on January 13, and William Lai, a supporter of the island's independence, won with 40.2% of the vote. In the run-up to the election, Chinese state media called Lai a "disturber of peace."
The governments of Germany, Japan, the Czech Republic, and a number of other countries also congratulated the winner of the election held in Taiwan. China has expressed strong displeasure over Western countries congratulating the winner of Taiwan's presidential election.
"Taiwan is an integral part of China and will not become a separate country, it will return to China," said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
