In a recent interview with RIA Novosti, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko revealed that Uzbekistan has expressed interest in purchasing sugar through the National Commodity Exchange (NTB). Kazakhstan has also shown interest in procuring this commodity through the same trading platform.
Both Central Asian states are among the main buyers of Russian food. In 2021, Russia exported over $37.7bn in foodstuffs, marking a historic high. Cereals and legumes were the most exported agricultural commodities from Russia, amounting to over $11.4bn in 2021.
Sugar imports by Uzbekistan
According to Evgeny Ivanov, an expert at the Institute of Agrarian Market Conjuncture, Uzbekistan imported about 5,000 tons of Russian sugar in the first half of November last year. In 2022, the amount of sugar imported into Uzbekistan totalled 740,000 tons. Uzbekistan mainly imports sugar from Russia and Azerbaijan.
Sugar imports by Kazakhstan
In 2021, Kazakhstan imported $182mn in raw sugar, primarily from Russia. The import price per kilogram of sugar into Kazakhstan over the last five years has been relatively stable.
