In a stride towards strengthening the country's agricultural sector, Kazakhstan is gearing up for the launch of 65 dairy farms as part of a large-scale project aimed at enhancing milk production, official information source of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan reported. The progress of this ambitious endeavor was recently discussed in a government meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin.
The 65 facilities, a mix of new establishments and expansions of existing dairy farms, are scheduled to commence operations within the current year. These developments are expected to significantly augment the country's milk production capacity. All participating enterprises have been incorporated into the pool of investment projects, making them eligible for a preferential loan at a remarkably low-interest rate of 2.5% over a period of 10 years. Notably, the state had earmarked KZT 100bn ($221.6mn) for this purpose in 2023.
During the meeting, Vice Minister of Agriculture Erbol Taszhurekov highlighted that the process of identifying potential projects began in April of the previous year. After the necessary documentation was reviewed and accepted, funds were directed to 11 regions involved in the Big Project. The Agricultural Production Cooperative is facilitating preferential lending to these projects.
Anticipating further progress, a second tranche of KZT 100bn ($221.6mn) is expected in 2024. These funds are earmarked for financing projects related to the irrigation of agricultural land, construction of poultry farms, development of vegetable and fruit storage facilities, and expansion of beef cattle breeding.
Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin, who presided over the meeting, listened to representatives from all regions participating in the Big Project. Deliberations focused on addressing any delays in the identification of future enterprises and the allocation of financing.
"No project scheduled for commissioning in 2024 should be postponed to 2025. Government funds allocated under the Big Project were intended to launch 65 farms primarily to significantly increase commercial milk production in the country," Zhumangarin emphasized. He further disclosed that each project would undergo scrutiny by a specialized commission.
While the construction of dairy farms constitutes a crucial aspect of the Big Project, Zhumangarin urged the regions to concurrently initiate the development of other industries. He instructed them to review and make decisions on all projects by the end of February, underscoring the multifaceted approach envisioned to boost Kazakhstan's agricultural landscape.
