Uzbekistan and Iran are set to embark on a collaborative venture by establishing a joint technology park in the Samarkand region, as per to reports from the Iranian daily Tehran Times. The initiative, aimed at fostering technological advancements, will be a focal point for sectors such as healthcare, the digital economy, and cultural industries.
A meeting is scheduled for January 6 in Tehran, where a delegation from Uzbekistan engages with several Iranian intellectual companies to discuss plans and strategies for the creation of the joint technology park in Samarkand. This collaborative effort signifies both nations' commitment to leveraging technology for economic development and innovation.
Ambassador Fariddin Nasriev, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Iran, highlighted the robust economic ties between the two countries. At the Iran Lab Expo 2024, he revealed that bilateral trade volume surpassed $500 mn last year. Looking ahead, there are ambitious plans to elevate the trade turnover to $1 bn, emphasizing the depth and potential of economic collaboration.
A noteworthy development in the diplomatic sphere is Iran's decision to cancel the visa regime for citizens of Uzbekistan. This move is expected to facilitate smoother people-to-people interactions, fostering closer ties between the two nations.
Iran House of Innovation and Technology (iHiT) in Tashkent
The inauguration of the Iran House of Innovation and Technology (iHiT) took place in Tashkent on June 18, 2023, with the goal of showcasing Iran's knowledge-based, technological, and creative products in Uzbekistan. This initiative, backed by a $4 mn investment from the private sector, aims to foster scientific interactions and cooperation between the two nations.
Additionally, a $10 mn technological cooperation agreement in the energy sector was signed during the inauguration, further enhancing bilateral collaboration. This marks another stride in Iran's efforts to export technological products globally, with similar innovation houses established in various countries under the support of the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology.
Earlier Daryo reported that President Ibrahim Raisi of Iran visited Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on November 9, 2023, to attend the 16th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit. This summit convened leaders of ECO member nations to deliberate on crucial regional matters and enhance economic and political collaboration.
