Uzbekistan has recently taken significant steps to address the growing waste management crisis and its adverse impact on the environment. A presidential decree, issued on January 4, introduces innovative measures that link the settlement of municipal solid waste (MSW) debts to substantial transactions, such as real estate and vehicle transactions. Set to be implemented from April 2024, this initiative is poised to reshape waste management practices across the country.
The Republican Center for Organization of Sanitary Cleaning Works will play a pivotal role in ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the system. Payments for waste disposal services and subscriber accounts will be processed exclusively through the center's billing system, payment systems, or bank cash registers.
Starting from April 2024, all sanitary cleaning enterprises are mandated to provide services to citizens by connecting to the unified electronic system. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in the cancellation of contracts with these enterprises, leading to the transfer of their territories to other entities under public-private partnerships.
To ensure the smooth technical support of billing systems and timely payment for solid waste removal services, 1% of funds received under the garbage tariff will be allocated to the account of Regional Electric Networks and the Republican Center for Organizing Sanitary Cleaning Works.
Earlier Daryo reported that Uzbekistan's Ministry of Energy is nearing completion of a program designed to automatically disconnect electricity when power consumption surpasses set limits. The objective of this undertaking is to tackle issues arising from elevated power demand and technical constraints, especially in colder weather conditions.
