In a historic achievement, the Kazakh national women's chess team secured the silver medal at the International Chess Federation World Women’s Team Championship (FIDE WWTC) 2023. The tournament, which concluded on September 12, witnessed Kazakhstan's chess players making their first-ever appearance in the championship final.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev extended his heartfelt congratulations to the victorious Kazakhstan women’s chess team, hailing their performance as a groundbreaking moment in the country's chess history. He expressed his optimism that their remarkable success would serve as a catalyst for the proliferation of chess among the younger generation.
In a statement posted on his Instagram page, President Tokayev assured continued government support for the development of chess in Kazakhstan and conveyed his best wishes to all Kazakh chess professionals and enthusiasts, encouraging them to pursue new milestones.
The Kazakh team's journey to the championship final was marked by impressive performances throughout the tournament. They entered the knockout stage as one of the top seeds and secured a resounding victory over France in the semifinals, showcasing their dominance, which had been evident during the pool stage as well.
However, the final matches proved to be a formidable challenge for the Kazakh chess players as they faced off against the strong Georgian team. Despite their best efforts, the Kazakh team ultimately conceded the final with scores of 1.5 – 2.5 and 0.5 – 3.5, securing the second-place position and the coveted silver medal.
The national team, consisting of talented chess players including Bibisara Assaubayeva, Xeniya Balabayeva, Assel Serikbay, Meruert Kamalidenova, Alua Nurmanova, and Amina Kairbekova, displayed remarkable teamwork and determination throughout the championship, earning them the "praiseworthy silver medal" and the admiration of chess enthusiasts worldwide.
