In 2023, Kazakhstan's aviation sector achieved a noteworthy milestone by setting a record, as reported by the Transport Ministry's press service on December 28. The airlines successfully transported a record-breaking 12 mn passengers, marking a substantial increase from the previous year.
This accomplishment coincided with the expansion of the airline's fleet, growing from 89 to 99 aircraft, and an augmentation of seat capacity from 12,000 to 15,000.
The press release highlighted ongoing developments in infrastructure, with three new passenger terminals underway in Almaty, Kyzylorda, and Shymkent, funded by private investors and slated for completion in March, May, and June of the coming year, respectively. Additionally, efforts have been made to subsidize 23 tourist routes, ensuring affordable air travel accessibility across all regions.
As per the Transport Ministry, projections indicate that Kazakhstan's airports will cater to over 25 mn passengers by the year-end, reflecting a substantial 22% increase compared to 2022. The country's air carriers have further extended their reach, operating flights to 110 destinations across 28 countries. In 2023 alone, 23 international air routes have been either resumed or introduced in 13 countries.
In the railway sector, Kazakhstan has witnessed significant investments, with the acquisition of 133 new locomotives and 275 gondola cars. Ongoing infrastructure projects include the construction of additional tracks on the Dostyk-Moiynty section and the development of a terminal in Xi'an.
Furthermore, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) has experienced a surge in activity, transporting nearly 2.7 mn tons of cargo in 2023, representing a remarkable 64% increase from the previous year. To bolster the TITR, strategic initiatives have been launched, including the construction of a Kazakh logistics center in the dry port of Xi'an in China, a multimodal terminal in the port of Poti in Georgia, and a trade and logistics hub in the Almaty Region.
