Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyzstan have inked a joint statement today, signaling their approval of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP). The initiative aims to enhance transboundary water cooperation, offering substantial benefits to the approximately 3mn residents inhabiting the Chu and Talas river basins, Water Convention/Protocol on Water & Health reports.
The Strategic Action Programme represents a comprehensive strategy strategically crafted to navigate the challenges posed by climate change. At its core, the program is designed to fortify the health, security, and economic prosperity of the populations dwelling in the Chu and Talas river basins, concurrently fostering resilience in the region's ecosystems.
Outlined within the SAP are six key strategic objectives, addressing crucial aspects such as water quality and quantity, conservation of ecosystems, climate change adaptation, bilateral cooperation, and robust monitoring mechanisms. Noteworthy is its emphasis on transboundary activities deemed essential for the sustainable development of these critical regions.
This collaborative endeavor gains additional strength from the formulation of national action plans, delineating specific activities tailored to the unique needs of each participating country.
The genesis of this initiative lies within the framework of the Global Environment Facility / UNDP / OSCE/ United Nations Economic Commission for Europe project titled 'Enabling Transboundary Co-operation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the Chu and Talas River Basins.' Responding to a joint request from the governments of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, this project underscores the shared commitment of both nations to environmental stewardship and the fostering of regional cooperation.
Earlier in an interview, UNICEF WASH Officer Sagitjan Aytjanov, revealed implementation of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme in Karakalakstan and Kyrgyzstan to improve facilities related to water, sanitation and hygiene.
