In 11M2023, Uzbekistan exported a diverse range of textile goods worth a total of $2.8bn, as the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan reports. This figure represents a 3.3% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. In the first four months of 2023 alone, Uzbekistan exported 21,800 tons of textile products to 16 countries for $102.9 mn.
The composition of the textile exports is predominantly finished textile products, which account for 41.3% of the total, and yarn, which makes up 40.7%. The country exported 626 different types of textile products to 63 countries worldwide.
Despite the slight decrease in exports, Uzbekistan’s textile industry remains robust. Between January and September 2023, exports of textiles like yarn reached $945 mn, while exports of clothing and other finished textile products amounted to $967.5 mn. The industry’s export value is expected to soar to $5bn by the end of 2023.
The global decline in demand for ready-to-wear apparel and garments has led to a decrease in exports of both yarn and fabric in 2023. This trend was also observed in 2022. Despite a small reduction in the area harvested for this period because of the government’s land redistribution policy, cotton production will be buoyed up by continued yield-enhancing investments in planting, harvesting, and processing cotton.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan did not enforce a minimum price for raw cotton in 2023, which may have influenced the export figures. Despite these challenges, Uzbekistan’s economy is expected to grow, with state budget revenues projected at UZS 233.6 tn ($18.9bn).
In March 2022, the longstanding forced labour issue plaguing Uzbekistan’s cotton industry was resolved from the perspective of international NGOs. This development alongside continued investment in the nation’s cotton sector could boost Uzbekistan’s future production and export of fabric and ready-to-wear garments.
