Uzbekistan's transport sector is set to undergo significant advancements as Russian holding company "Sinara - Transport Machines" announces plans to supply six shunting diesel locomotives to the country in 2024, as TASS reports. This follows a previously signed contract, with the first batch of diesel locomotives already delivered.
"Two years ago we signed a contract with Uzbekistan for the supply of diesel locomotives, the first diesel locomotives have already been delivered, and the next delivery of six more diesel locomotives is next year," the official stated.
In 2022, Sinara dispatched five shunting locomotives to Uzbekistan under a contract with local company Enter Engineering. Sinara's specialists also provided training for local personnel on the operation and maintenance of these machines. Sinara intends to establish service centres in Uzbekistan in 2024 for warranty and service maintenance, aiming to fortify the country's infrastructure and support its transport sector.
Concurrently, there have been noteworthy developments in Uzbekistan's mining sector. Uralmashzavod, a member of Gazprombank's industrial group, is constructing a turnkey mining and processing plant at the Almalyk site for the Eshlik-1 field's development. Originally scheduled for completion in 2023, the $2bn project has been postponed to 2024.
The collaboration between Russia and Uzbekistan extends beyond locomotive supply and mining ventures. Uzbekistan's Tashkent Metro has received five metro trains from Transmashholding (TMH), another Russian company. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the country's urban infrastructure and municipal services.
The contract has been signed between Uzbekistan's state company Toshkent Metropoliteni and Russia's Metrovagonmash to purchase ten trains for the Tashkent metro. The deal, valued at 52.85 mn euros ($63 mn), was financed by Russia's Eximbank and VEB.RF, is one of Russia's largest investment companies.
In line with Uzbekistan's infrastructure reforms, the World Bank has approved additional financing for the Medium-Size Cities Integrated Urban Development Project (MSCIUDP). This project, supported by a $100 mn concessional credit from the International Development Association, aims to improve urban infrastructure and municipal services in cities located in two southern regions of Uzbekistan.
