A meeting of the Conference of General Directors of Railways of the member countries of the Organisation for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD) is planned to be held in Ashgabat from 13 to 19 April 2024.
The Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan reports that the event will give new impetus to the interaction of the international railway community.
On the agenda are intensification of transit traffic, improvement of the Agreement on International Railway Freight Traffic and ensuring competitiveness of transit freight railway traffic.
The purpose of OSJD, which is composed of 29 countries, is to development and improvement of international railway traffic, first of all in communication between Europe and Asia, including combined traffic.
Turkmenistan has recently become an official participant of the Agreement on the International Transport Corridor (ITC) "North-South".
Experts told Daryo that the country is becoming a transport hub thanks to the launch in 2014 of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, the longest part of which - 700km - passes through Turkmenistan.
Ashgabat also expects to reach the markets of China, and from there the Asia-Pacific region, through the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railway.
Turkmenistan has already built railway tracks to Afghanistan's borders and has taken on the task of laying rails to the Afghan cities of Aqina and Herat.
