In January-November 2023, 61.1 thousand foreign citizens arrived in Uzbekistan for business purposes, among which the largest number is Turkmenistan - 39.3 thousand, according to the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan.
This was followed by Tajikistan (13,500) and Afghanistan (8,300).
Turkmen citizens have had to obtain entry visas to cross the border since 1999, after Ashgabat decided to withdraw from a visa-free agreement with the CIS.
Neighbouring countries are interested in expanding cross-border trade. Turkmenistan's longest common border is with Uzbekistan - 1,700km. About 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks live in Turkmenistan and more than 200,000 Turkmen live in Uzbekistan.
