As winter approaches, concerns about the stability of Uzbekistan's energy system have been addressed by the Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, during the "Government Hour" of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
Responding to questions from Member of Parliament Umida Rahmonova regarding the nation's readiness for the winter season, Minister Mirzamahmudov highlighted the proactive measures taken to prevent a recurrence of last year's challenges.
The minister began his address by acknowledging that November's warmer temperatures had resulted in lower energy consumption. Drawing comparisons with the previous year, he noted that November 2022 had seen the introduction of a daily consumption limit due to generation capacity constraints.
Mirzamahmudov delved into the issues faced in Tashkent during abnormal cold spells, emphasizing that a significant increase in electricity consumption occurred after a drop in natural gas pressure. This led to the inability to provide heating, resulting in fires in transformers and wires, and accidents at substations.
"In response to these challenges, significant steps have been taken. In the most problematic areas, such as Yunusabad and Almazor districts, additional lines have been laid across the city, distributing individual cables to other substations. This has effectively reduced the load," explained Minister Mirzamahmudov.
Addressing the drop in gas pressure at heating centers, he outlined a strategy involving the installation of a separate gas pipeline from the industrial network to ensure uninterrupted supply to the population. Furthermore, large stations were equipped to burn fuel oil in case of gas pressure fluctuations. A dedicated boiler room has been renovated for this purpose, with 2,000 tons of fuel oil reserves ensuring a guaranteed heating system.
Anticipating potential anomalies in weather conditions or emergency situations, the Minister emphasized the development of a comprehensive algorithm to identify and suspend large consumers if necessary. Additionally, strategic reserves of fuel oil and natural gas have been stockpiled to mitigate any unforeseen challenges.
Minister Mirzamahmudov concluded by assuring the public that Uzbekistan's energy system is well-prepared to face the upcoming winter, with a comprehensive strategy in place to safeguard against potential crises and ensure the uninterrupted supply of energy to the nation.
