UNICEF and Gavi boost Uzbekistan's immunization program with $3.2mn support
UNICEF and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance have jointly announced the provision of in-kind assistance to the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, valued at more than $3.2mn, as per the UNICEF press service.
The support from Gavi encompasses a range of equipment and waste management resources distributed across Uzbekistan. The donation includes 3,000 tablets and 221 remote temperature control systems, aiming to play a pivotal role in modernizing Uzbekistan's immunization program.
The digitization initiative is expected to empower the Ministry of Health to efficiently monitor vaccine coverage, oversee vaccine supply chains, and enhance overall immunization management. Alongside IT equipment, UNICEF and Gavi have supplied waste processing equipment and annual cost materials to 28 health institutions in Andijan, Namangan, Jizzakh, Surkhondarya, and Syrdarya regions, as well as the Republican Emergency Medical Research Center in Tashkent. This broader effort aims to bolster the country's healthcare system.
This collaborative support represents the outcome of UNICEF and Gavi's joint endeavors to establish sustainable and equitable immunization systems, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and enhance public confidence in vaccination. Yan Castillos Franca, senior portfolio manager of Gavi in Uzbekistan, highlighted that over 8,000 vaccination workers will benefit from the introduced digital and climate change-resistant technologies for waste management.
Franca emphasized the ongoing commitment of UNICEF and Gavi to assist the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan in achieving universal immunization coverage, ensuring every child has the opportunity for a healthy and fulfilling life. The provision of IT equipment and waste management devices aligns with their continuous efforts to fortify health systems and enhance access to critical vaccines for children globally.
In a related development, it was previously reported that the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan was considering the purchase of 10 Airbus helicopters.
