In a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of newborns and children, UNICEF Kyrgyzstan has delivered cutting-edge equipment for the early screening of hearing problems to 22 family medicine centers and maternity hospitals throughout the country. This initiative, which aims to address hearing impairment issues from the very first days of a child's life, has been hailed as a milestone in improving healthcare access for families across Kyrgyzstan.
The newly supplied equipment, valued at KGS 8.6mn (equivalent to over $99,000), empowers medical professionals to swiftly identify hearing impairments in newborns, facilitating early intervention and care. Notably, Osh Inter-Regional Children’s Hospital has become the first medical institution in southern Kyrgyzstan to be equipped with state-of-the-art technology for diagnosing and verifying hearing issues in children.
The 22 audio screening devices distributed to medical facilities in key regions such as Bishkek, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Nookat, Suzak, Cholpon-Ata, and Kara-Kol offer a preliminary diagnosis of hearing difficulties, enabling timely interventions. Additionally, the National Center for Maternity and Children’s Health and the Children’s Hospital in Osh have received diagnostic equipment that allows medical staff to conduct comprehensive assessments of hearing problems.
Jyrgalbek Tolorov, the head of the Osh Regional Children’s Hospital, expressed his gratitude, saying;
"For the first time, parents in the south of our country can come to Osh, instead of going all the way to Bishkek to identify hearing issues in their children. Big thanks to the National Center of Mother and Child Health for their capacity building and leadership."
A crucial aspect of this initiative is the training provided to healthcare professionals. Over 150 doctors in relevant medical facilities have completed training courses to ensure the correct and effective use of the equipment. Even family doctors and family nurses have been equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify early signs of hearing issues in children.
UNICEF Kyrgyzstan is committed to collaborating with the Government of Kyrgyzstan to further the cause of early detection of health problems in children. By doing so, they aim to prevent or treat these issues promptly, promoting the overall well-being and future prospects of Kyrgyzstan's youngest citizens.
This effort represents a significant stride toward providing equitable healthcare services for children across Kyrgyzstan, helping ensure that all children, regardless of their geographical location, have access to early screening and intervention for hearing problems.
