In the wake of the 2021 conflict in Ukraine, numerous Indian students pursuing medical studies found themselves caught in a war zone. Fortunately, they were evacuated under the Indian Government's initiative known as "Operation Ganga." These students, determined to continue their education in medicine, have found refuge and new opportunities in Uzbekistan, where they are now studying at the Samarkand State Medical University.
The Times of India recently reported on the experiences of these Indian students who were forced to leave Ukraine during the war. Amit, hailing from Bihar, India, shared his harrowing journey, revealing that he had spent a terrifying night in a basement, uncertain if he would make it out alive. It was only through the intervention of the Indian government that he and many others were rescued from the war-torn region.
After being evacuated from Ukraine, Amit was determined to continue his medical studies. Exploring various options, he eventually made the decision to relocate to Uzbekistan. Despite the higher living expenses in Samarkand compared to Ukraine, Amit remained resolute in his pursuit of education. Samarkand State Medical University has been instrumental in assisting over 1,000 displaced Indian students to continue their academic journeys.
Tanwi Wadhva, another student from Punjab who was studying at Bukovinian State Medical University in Ukraine, had reservations about joining Samarkand State Medical University due to the loss of a semester during the war. However, the university's Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zafar Aminov, took proactive measures. Collaborating with the Indian embassy, he worked to enroll Wadhva a semester back by evaluating his previous medical studies and checking the requirements.
Furthermore, to ease the transition for these students, the university has employed an additional 30 Indian professors. This effort is aimed at ensuring that language barriers do not hinder the students' educational experience at the university, allowing them to seamlessly integrate into their new academic environment.
