In a move towards harnessing the country's natural resources, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev recently visited the Boysun district of Surxondaryo region to oversee the construction of the "25th Anniversary of Independence" gas-chemical complex. The president's determined efforts have propelled the development of a gas field discovered decades ago, promising economic growth and job opportunities for the region.
The gas field, dormant for years due to geographical complexities and technological limitations, finally saw progress after President Mirziyoyev's visit in April 2019. Practical steps were initiated, and by December of the same year, construction on the ambitious project commenced.
The foreign company "Surhan Gas Chemical Operating Company” is leading the implementation of the $2.9bn project, set to have the capacity to extract and process 5 bn cubic meters of gas annually. With $1.45bn already invested and 20 wells drilled, 11 gas wells have undergone successful testing. The project, based on licensed technologies from "Shell," aligns with the most advanced environmental standards, boasting the capability to neutralize 99% of harmful production waste – a first in the CIS countries.
An additional feat is the plant's self-sufficiency in electricity production, benefitting the local community. The construction progress, evident in the completion of foundation works and metal structures, reflects the adherence to international standards and advanced technology.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized during his visit that the ultimate goal is not merely to sell raw gas but to process it into high-quality value-added products. He emphasized the importance of quick returns on investments and ensuring the factory's competitiveness in the market.
“The main goal should be not to sell gas in raw form but to process it and obtain value-added products. In order for the investment to pay off quickly and for the factory to be competitive, it is necessary to ensure that the final product is high-quality and profitable,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated.
Situated 20 kilometers from Boysun, the complex is a bustling hub of activity, employing over 7,000 individuals and specialized equipment. The first phase of the project is slated to launch in May of the following year, with full operational capacity expected by 2025. Once completed, the complex will be Uzbekistan's eighth gas-chemical facility, standing as one of Surxondaryo's largest industrial enterprises and providing 1,050 high-income jobs.
"The people of Boysun should feel the impact of this monumental factory in their district, recognizing the thousands of new jobs it has created. It is now imperative to develop ancillary industries around this complex," stated President Mirziyoyev, emphasizing the broader economic benefits for the region.
During the visit, another announcement was made – the discovery of a combustible slanes mine in Boysun district, introducing the potential for electricity, oil, and gas production, further enhancing Uzbekistan's economic diversification efforts.
