In a pivotal move towards addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Uzbekistan is set to send a high-profile delegation to the World Climate Summit, an integral component of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The summit is scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 1-2, 2023, and is expected to draw representatives from nearly every corner of the globe, including major international organizations and civil society.
The World Climate Summit holds immense significance in the global effort to combat climate change and mitigate its far-reaching consequences. The agenda encompasses crucial discussions on international cooperation, financial strategies for climate initiatives, and the transition to sustainable, green energy sources.
For Central Asia, climate change has emerged as a particularly acute problem, exacerbated by an environmental crisis stemming from the drying up of the Aral Sea. In response, Uzbekistan has embraced a proactive stance, implementing measures to adapt key sectors of its economy to climate change, striving for carbon neutrality, and actively increasing the share of renewable energy.
Uzbekistan's commitment to addressing environmental challenges is further underscored by its hosting of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 21) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Samarkand from November 13-17, 2023. Over 130 countries will be represented at this significant event.
Looking ahead, Samarkand is slated to host the International Climate Forum next year. The forum will provide a platform for discussions surrounding a draft UN General Assembly resolution focused on supporting Central Asian countries in their efforts to combat climate change.
As Uzbekistan prepares to participate in COP 28, the nation aims to put forth a series of proposals and initiatives designed to strengthen the global fight against climate change. These proposals will encompass measures at the national, regional, and global levels, emphasizing Uzbekistan's commitment to contributing meaningfully to the international effort.
Crucially, Uzbekistan has thrown its support behind the key initiatives of the United Arab Emirates, which holds the chairmanship of COP 28. This collaboration underscores the interconnected nature of global climate efforts and the importance of collective action in the face of a rapidly changing climate.
